Pura Vida! Welcome to Our Adventure

Have you ever been attacked by monkeys, hiked in one of the most biologically diverse places on earth, or had your wallet stolen, then given back? Matthew Houde and Jennifer Turnbull share these adventures and more in the book, Two Weeks in Costa Rica.

In a style that is part narrative, part guidebook, these seasoned travelers bring us along as they trek through lush jungle, brave the local bus, and explore far-off towns. They introduce us to the vibrant culture of Costa Rica and teach us how this jewel of Central America is best traveled.

But this book isn’t just another travel story. Through their journey, Matt and Jenn learn that life is about more than the daily grind and discover what it means to live pura vida.

EXCERPTS from Two Weeks in Costa Rica

"As we sipped the house-specialty cocktail of lemonade mixed with rum, we watched an endless line of leaf-cutter ants carry tiny white flowers and leaves along a concrete railing. . . . These industrious ants were apparently unaware of Costa Rica’s pura vida attitude, working long hours into the night. We could relate. Although we had begun to unwind today, our hectic jobs were still fresh in our minds. . . .

Putting things in perspective, the cooks roared with laughter from the kitchen. The dining room had them scrambling to make more sauce, but they were enjoying every minute. As they opened an enormous can of tomatoes, one of them sang, while the other two swayed and danced. Maybe the secret to a less stressful work life was to have a good attitude? Although I’m not sure dancing through my landscaping clients’ yards would go over too well."

* * *

"Feeling like explorers discovering a new land, we walked along the faint trail through fresh spiderwebs and among strange bird calls high in the canopy. Around every corner, there was something different. Monkeys plucked wild fruit from trees, mother ring-tailed coatis led their babies across the jungle floor, and orange and black Halloween crabs ducked into holes as we approached. All of these animals acted as if they had never seen a human before, and the chances that they had were slim. The vivid memory of that trip was crystalized by the familiar sound of rushing water from the sea, the distinct squawks of Scarlet Macaw parrots, and the humid air rising in dewy droplets off wet sand."
