Snorkel Tour to Cano Island – From Uvita
Caño Island is about 10 miles offshore and is one of the best places in Costa Rica for snorkeling. This protected biological reserve is located off the southern Pacific coast near the pristine Osa Peninsula, about a 1.5 hour boat ride from Uvita.
The water is usually fairly clear and there is lots of marine life living in the reefs around the island. You can see different schooling fish, barracuda, pufferfish, moray eels, sting rays, and sometimes manta rays, sharks, and turtles. On the way out to the island, it’s possible to see dolphins or even whales from the boat.
Snorkeling conditions are usually good since it’s so far offshore. On our visits, we have swam alongside a sea turtle and have even gotten to see some white tip reef sharks (harmless). The snorkeling is broken up into two sessions (about 1 hour and 15 minutes each).
Lunch is served on the boat. After lunch, you’ll be taken to Cano Island for a short visit. Here, you can relax on the pristine beach or hike up a short trail to the lookout. Bathrooms are available on the island (the boat does not have one).
The boat then heads back to Uvita, arriving around 2 p.m.
There is no dock or marina in Uvita so you will wade through the shallow water to enter the boat.
Be sure to book in advance as the Costa Rican government limits the number of tickets and boats accessing Cano Island.
