Alajuela to La Fortuna Bus

I know there is a bus station in San Jose where there are direct buses to La Fortuna, but I’m wondering if the buses depart for La Fortuna from Alajuela, or if the San Jose buses going towards La Fortuna pass through Alajuela. That would save us a trip from the airport to San Jose, and then doubling back again on the bus as it takes the road back near the airport on its way up to La Fortuna.
