We’ll be in the La Fortuna/Arenal area for three days staying at the Volcano Lodge and Springs.  We’ve got a car reserved at the Alamo in town but I’m wondering if it’s necessary.  Without a car, how would we visit the national park, hot springs, waterfall, etc.  We generally prefer exploring on our own to paid tours.

Hi kjpollock,
If you are going to be exploring on your own, you’ll definitely want a rental car for your time in La Fortuna. Your hotel is a little ways out of town and things like the National Park, La Fortuna Waterfall, etc. aren’t at all within walking distance. There is a public bus that runs along that main road but it doesn’t run all that frequently, and wouldn’t get you that close to the waterfall or national park. So you are right to rent a car. Be sure to compare the price you got from Alamo with the Rental Car Discount we get for our readers through Adobe, maybe you could save you a bit of cash.
