Greetings. I searched the forums, but was unable to locate a question or string that addressed our concern. We are flying in to Liberia airport Friday Jan 12th, and planning to drive to Malpais for the week. If we leave about 3:30, it looks like it should take 4-5 hours, placing us in Malpais about 7:30-8:00. Since it gets dark around 5:30, and the suggested route seems to be 21 to 621/624, would you recommend we drive after dark the final 2 hours? The host at the house we are staying indicated we should be fine, but I also wanted your opinion. There will be four of us, and planning to rent from Adobe using your web link. An option would be to stay in a motel in Nicoya, but we will be anxious to get to Malpais. We appreciate any suggestions, or advice you are willing to offer. Thank you. Scott.
Hi Scott,
We wouldn’t recommend driving in the dark and we still try to avoid it (even on paved roads) ourselves after 4 years of living here. You’ll be going on some pretty remote roads that last part so if anything happens, you are stuck waiting for someone to come along and hopefully help. People are really nice here for the most part but it gets pitch black out when the sun goes down and you really don’t want to be broken down or lost in the middle of dirt jungle roads. Of course people do it and it turns out fine but in our opinion it would be better to lay up somewhere for the night and enjoy the drive in the daylight the next day. Hope this helps you decide, have a great time!
