Hi!
Thank you for all the wonderful information on your site! We’re also from Boston! This will be the second time we’re visiting Costa Rica; we will be going to La Fortuna and Puerto Viejo, with 10 full days. My original plan was to travel to La Fortuna, spend 4 full days there, travel to Sarapiquí to split up the commute/overnight, then finish the journey to Puerto Viejo to spend that afternoon and the following 3.5 days there before traveling back to SJO the night before our flight home. My travel companion isn’t sure that Puerto Viejo needs that much time since it seems more laid back and “beach-y.” We just wanted your opinion as to whether there is a good amount of things to do in the Puerto Viejo area (including the surrounding communities) to deserve 3.5/4 days there.
Thank you for all your help!
Hi Leigh,
3.5 days is definitely not too much time to spend in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. There is a lot to see and do in that area including wildlife centers, hiking, visits to indigenous cultures, chocolate tours, surfing, snorkeling, horseback riding, etc..Check out our post about Puerto Viejo for more. You will also probably want to spend at least one day going up to Cahuita for the National Park there. Hope this helps and you have a great time!
