I told my friend we would be staying in Dominical for a week and she ever so casually mentioned that her family, took a wrong turn driving into town, and the police appeared with guns, seeking money. I realize this intimidation happens, but is it something I need to take precautions for as we have two young children. We will have a rental car so I know we will stand out in a small town?… thoughts?! Am I worrying for nothing? Or appropriately?
Hi Laurie,
I wonder when your friend experienced that? Maybe it was many years ago? We have been living just outside Dominical for a couple of years and following the area for close to 10 now and haven’t heard of any incidents like that. There is a police checkpoint (building) on the highway where sometimes you will have to stop briefly but the officers are always very friendly and professional, at least in our experience. Usually they are just doing routine stops to see if there are any suspicious vehicles/people in the area. This has a lot to do with the Panama border not being too far away and a lot of tractor trailers traveling up from there. Hopefully that makes you feel better.
