Your website has been so incredibly helpful – thank you! My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to Costa Rica in November 2018. We’ll be there for 18 days (includes our 2 travel days) – on the first day we should land at SJO around midday, and on the last day, we fly our of Liberia at 2pm. My question is about the best way to get around to all the places we’re visiting. We’re staying overnight by SJO, and then going to Paquera/Gulf of Nicoya (3 nights), Uvita (3 nights), Monteverde (3 nights), La Fortuna (4 nights), and finally Playa Hermosa Guanacaste (3 nights). It looks like the longest drives are from SJO area to Paquera and then Paquera to Uvita (I’m guessing because of the ferry). Those are both mapping at around 6 hours. Would you recommend we rent a car for the whole trip? Or are there flights that you know of that we could take for the SJO-Paquera-Uvita leg? Thanks!

Hi Jill,
It would probably be best to rent a car. There are some domestic flights from San Jose to Tambor but then getting to Quepos or Palmar Sur (two closest airports to Uvita), you’d have to go back through San Jose. The flights don’t run a lot to and from Tambor so the schedule might not work and it would be expensive. The nice thing about the ferry ride is that it breaks up the drive. You actually get out of the car and can relax and enjoy the views. See our Taking the Puntarenas-Paquera Ferry post for more info. It’s worth checking flights but otherwise driving is definitely recommended for those destinations.
