Hi there, thank you so much for all the help you have provided on this website.  It is much appreciated.  About rte 142, you mentioned that google maps would try to suggest a short cut to go around Tileran, but you also say to stay on 142 because the short cut requires a 4×4 and some steep driving.  Now when looking at the map, it seems like rte 142 as it is drops down to Tileran and back up to the right of Tejona along the coast of Arenal.     So were basically going from Potrero to La Fortuna, my 1st drive… Trying to keep it clean as possible.

Hi Arie, 
The shortcut that Google sometimes recommends (with the steep dirt part) has you get off Route 142 and go on a side road through the small town of Ranchitos. It then connects back up to Route 142. If you stay on Route 142 the whole time, you will be all set, smooth sailing on paved roads.
