Hi, I’m so glad I came across your site, the driving info is very helpful.
We are travelling to Costa Rica in April 2018 – 2 adults, a 3 year old and the baby I’m carrying who should be around 4 months all being well. We’re renting a car and travelling from SJO to Hotel Belmar in Monteverde but then need to get to Santa Teresa for the remainder of the trip. I had thought about travelling back to SJO and flying to Tambor, then a car transfer but it seems like a lot of hassle. Would you recommend driving directly? If so, any particularly good places to stop along the way. We’re spending 8 nights in Santa Teresa so happy to take it easy on the journey.
Many thanks, Kalindy
Hi Kalindy,
Yes, driving directly might make more sense since Tambor is still a good drive to Santa Teresa and you’d be backtracking all the way to San Jose to catch a flight (which might only be in the morning). After you make the drive from Monteverde to Route 1, you might want to stop somewhere before getting on Route 18 (there are a few restaurants and a gas station near that intersection). After that, there isn’t a lot to stop and see but the drive is really pretty. Later on, Paquera is a good place to stop to stretch your legs, get gas, snacks, or whatever, since there are some stores there. Have a great time and best of luck with the arrival of the new little one. Be sure to read our Traveling with a Baby post and our Packing List for a Baby before you come 🙂
