We are planning a trip in early July with our 17 and 20 year old. Will likely rent a place to stay through vrbo or airbnb – hoping to base out of one location for the week and explore from there – would like to be close to a city with nice restaurants and also be able to have manageable drives to hiking, horseback riding, zip lining etc. What locations would you recommend we consider?

If you are looking for a beach location you could read our posts on Jaco and Manuel Antonio. Both have great restaurants and easy access to those things. If inland is ok, you might like La Fortuna, though the restaurant selection isn’t quite as extensive. Our Destinations Summary Guide might also help you narrow down the search.
